A Message from the President

Submitted by on August 1, 2017 – 9:43 PM | 206 views

My name is Paul Tomczuk and I am thrilled to be the new president of the Penn State Hoops Club.   I am a 1985 graduate of Penn State and a 1988 graduate of the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University.  I first started attending PSU basketball games as a student in the early 80’s cheering for the likes of Rich Fetter, Craig Collins and Mike Lang.  I was still a student when Bruce Parkhill took over the team and built a great program that has served as the foundation for the successes of the coaching staffs and teams that followed.

From the thrilling victories—like the 1991 upset of UCLA, the 2001 win over UNC on our way to the Sweet 16 and the 2009 NIT Championship—to the crushing defeats—such as the 1993 Indiana game at Rec Hall—I, like most of you, have lived and died with Penn State Basketball.  Through the years, I have provided my individual support for the program by being an ardent fan and encouraging others to join me.  However, my new role as president of the Hoops Club will allow me, along with the new board, to identify opportunities for the Hoops Club to provide much needed support to Penn State Basketball like helping to support the team’s trip abroad.

As most of you know, the Club has historically focused primarily on organizing social events for Club members.  Although the board believes that these events are extremely important to the Club and its members and plans to continue these events, we also want to help Coach Chambers and the team experience great success.  Consequently, we have decided to focus part of our mission on raising money for the team’s trip abroad, which happens every four years.  Coach Chambers has made it clear that if the Club is able to allocate a portion of its funds to help pay for the trip it would be a huge help to the program and the team.  We are excited to assist the program in this way and you will be hearing more about our goals for this particular objective in the coming months.

In the meantime, we are looking forward to our football tailgates, the start of the new season, and all of the awesome Hoops Club events that you have enjoyed in the past.  I also wanted to note that, this season, we are holding several post-game socials in the Founders Room of the BJC which will be attended by the coaches and players.  With these socials, we hope to replicate the good times that club members had while attending post-game socials at the Nittany Lion Inn after games at Rec Hall.

If you have questions or ideas, please feel free to send an email to info@pennstatehoopsclub.com and either I or one of the other board members will get back to you.  Thanks and I look forward to seeing you at Hoops Clubs events this fall.

Paul Tomczuk

P.S.  The membership applications will be in the mail shortly or you can download the application here.   In addition, this year your organization will have the opportunity to sponsor a tailgate.  If you are interested, please send us an email for more information.
